Announcement

Shortly after Christmas 2007 my ISP had a major server crash and lost my entire blog. Every thing was gone, including my large subscriber database.

Nothing was left except the basic template which I still had on my own hard drive. The entire blog was held on the server and I never bothered downloading a backup. You may think that was silly, and I agree, but my ISP assured me the entire server was backed up daily and if anything happened they could restore everything from backup.

Unfortunately, the very worst happened and my isp said they couldn’t recover the data. They did try for a couple of weeks, so they told me at the time. But said it would be impossible. Then, out of the blue they said they should be able to recover my entire blog in tact, using special forensic software, but it would cost £1,000 plus VAT.

At this point I said forget it, and walked away. I just decided the blog was go and that was the end of it. After a month or two I calmed down, and began to think “Why should it be the end of the blog, I can start again.” So, with nothing more than the original template and a few email addresses of previous members, I decided to resurrect the Blandford Blog.

So now the blog is back up and running, or should that be crawling? To begin with the blog is being hosted on free web space until I find a reliable host.

So far freehostia has been brilliant, and are the current favourite for paid hosting.

I would welcome any comments on your experiences with various ISP’s, good or bad.
Minimum requirements for an ISP are SQL database, PHP and a proven track record for when things go wrong.

Oh, and they must provide an outstanding service which betters the service provided by freehostia. I guess that rules out a lot of ISP’s then!
